"The animosity and hatred between the two (Xiongnu) kingdoms being so deeply entrenched that they waited for the slightest opportunity to draw their bows and raise their lances against each other. The warriors watched out for plumes of dust, like clouds they gathered, like birds they dispersed; they raided and attacked each other, causing incalculable deaths and casualties. There had hardly been one year of peace."
