A Han heqin bride by Zuo Guoshun
After Emperor Gao's failed invasion of the Xiongnu, Modu continued his attacks at the border. Emperor Gao turned to Liu Jing for advice:
"199 BCE: Liu Jing replied, 'if your Majesty would contemplate in betrothing your eldest daughter (Princess Liu Yuan) to Maodun as wife, as you see when a Chanyu has been given a Han princess in marriage accompanied by opulent dowries, I assure you he would make her his Queen - Yanzhi. If she should deliver him a son, he would most certainly make him the Crown Prince."
Emperor Gao approved of this idea but his wife, Lu Zhi, did not. The following year, a civilian young woman was chosen to fill the role of Emperor Gao's daughter.
