The state of Yueban was formed by the vanquished Northern Xiongnu who were forced westward by Chinese invaders in the 1st-2nd C. CE. It was located around Lake Balkhash. Despite their early defeat, Yueban seems to have been the last surviving independent Xiongnu state in history.
The Yueban state had the same name as a Xiongnu capital city in Ordos (modern day China). Helian Bobo lived in that Ordos city as a child and may have been born there. The city in Ordos fell to the Northern Wei who exterminated the Xiongnu ruling clans. The Yueban state around Lake Balkhash lasted until about 487 CE when it ceased to exist after being invaded by the Tiele/Gaoche people. Less than a decade later the Hephthalites (White Huns) overthrew the Tiele/Gaoche invaders. The Yueban Xiongnu were later conquered by the Rouran and the Turks until they gradually disappeared.
