Homer, The Blind Poet, 2nd C. BCE

"There is nothing better in this world than that man and wife should be of one mind in a house. It discomfits their enemies, makes the hearts of their friends glad, and they themselves know more about it than any one."

-Homer: The Odyssey, Book 6

Bust of Homer in the British Museum, London. Marble terminal bust of Homer. Roman 2nd c. CE copy of a lost Hellenistic original of the 2nd c. BCE. Found in 1780 near Baiae, Italy. The so-called Hellenistic blind-type can be paralleled with figures of the Pergamon Altar, and the original of the type was perhaps created for the great library at Pergamon.

Drawing of the statue.
