Medallion of Aquilius from the Batavian Revolt 69-70 CE

"Tacitus mentions a certain Aquilius who collected the soldiers from the destroyed fortresses and brought them to safety. It is likely that he was the owner of the silver medallion found in the cavalry fort on the Kops Plateau in Nijmegen. If this is correct - and the name is sufficiently rare for that - suddenly a lot becomes clear. After all, the medallion mentions that the officer was part of the Eighth Legion Augusta , which was stationed in Svishtov in 69 in Bulgaria. If legionaries have indeed been transferred from the Balkans to Nijmegen, Hordeonius Flaccus, characterized by Tacitus as incompetent, has seen what is to come. He asked Vitellius for reinforcements and received them. The silver object is nothing less than the rehabilitation of the governor.

While Aquilius was trying to save what could be saved, Civilis offered the Roman leaders to mute the Cananefate riot with his Batavians. The legionaries and auxiliaries could rest in Xanten. However, the Romans saw through it and somewhere around Nijmegen it came to a meeting."
