Mari (Cheremis) "Amazons" by Alexei Grigoriev

"The army of the governor Boris Saltykov was sent against the Mari, but it was utterly defeated. Then in the winter of 1553/54, the tsar sent an army of 30,000 under the command of Prince Semyon Mikulinsky. The recognition of the Russian chronicler testifies to the methods of war. The Moscow governors exterminated more than 10 thousand people on the spot, and 20 thousand Mari, including 15 thousand women and children, were sold into slavery. 1600 noble Mari men taken prisoner were killed so that they could no longer lead their people.

Despite these measures, it was only in 1557 that the first uprising of the Mari was suppressed."
