"During these wars, the Mari were supported by certain peoples of the former Kazan Khanate, and the Third Cheremis War became especially large in scope. Kazan Tatars, Chuvashs and Udmurts also rose up against Russia. The insurgents pursued an active foreign policy, sent embassies to the Crimea and to the Nogais, trying to enlist their help."
