The Chotkar Patyr monument by unknown artists

"Recently, a monument to the Mari hero Chotkar Patyr was erected in the Volzhsky region near the village of Nurmuchash. The statue is made of wood.

According to legend, Chotkar lived in the 13th century. He liberated the entire Mari region from the nomads who attacked the Mari villages. The hero was buried on a hill between the villages of Nurmuchash and Usola.

Before his death, the Mari hero asked to put his sword and shield with him in the grave and promised to come to the rescue in difficult times when the Mari people would be overcome by enemies.

The monument was erected on a hill next to the Pez River. The height of the statue is 3.5 meters.

“There was an idea to make such a cultural and historical complex“ Chotkar Patyr ”, which would combine both the memorial part and the part for the youth,” commented the initiator of the project Igor Kudryavtsev.

The architecture of the complex will be made of wood. The project will be completed in several years. According to the initiators, they want the complex to be nationwide."

The badanovag blog sourced at the bottom of the page had a lot of very nice pictures of the scenery seen on the path to the statue itself.
