"The Second Cheremis War broke out in 1571 under the leadership of Kachak, the son of the hero of the First Cheremis War, Mamich-Berdey. The Mari tried to take advantage of the plight of Moscow after it was burned by the Crimean Khan Devlet-Giray. The uprising of the Mari threatened Moscow's power over the entire recently annexed Volga region. Despite the ongoing Livonian War, the king again sent large military forces against the Mari. In 1574, the Mari were humbled. During this war, Russia suffered a major defeat in Livonia from the Swedes at the Battle of Lod."
